Lauren França is an American-Brazilian photographer born in Los Angeles and currently based in Sorocaba, São Paulo. Her practice blends documentary storytelling with staged scenarios, exploring themes of intimacy, memory, and familial dynamics through quiet, vulnerable moments of daily life. She frequently collaborates with those closest to her to populate her work.

Originally trained in analog photography,  Lauren later shifted her focus to studying literature and teaching. After a long hiatus, she returned to the medium during the pandemic while living in Santa Monica—a period that coincided with her mother moving in with her following an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. It was during this time that Lauren made her mother the central subject of an ongoing body of work examining the fragility and complexity of aging, memory, and identity.

In July 2024, as her mother’s condition progressed, Lauren relocated with her to Brazil to dedicate herself full-time to photography and caretaking.  The profound experience and emotional impact of caregiving has led her into a long-term project exploring the nuanced, evolving relationships between mothers and daughters across different stages of life.

Beyond her personal practice, Lauren actively fosters spaces for community and creative collaboration. In August 2025, she opened Elza’s House, an independent art space dedicated to collaborative exhibitions. Shortly after, in April 2026, she co-founded Paredão: Arte a Céu Aberto (Big Wall: Open-Air Art), an initiative bringing photography into the urban landscape of downtown Sorocaba.
